March 2009
Vancouver. Quirky and full of life, British Columbia’s largest city is definitely a destination on its own. With a population of two million, it’s surrounded by mountains and a pristine harbour that’s the gateway to the west coast. We stay smack bang in the centre of town at the boutique Opus Hotel. Thus we can explore the city on foot and avoid taxis, leaving us with a little in the kitty to go to a really good restaurant. We choose the ultra-cool Salt Ta sting Room (salttastingroom.com ) in Gastown, the heart of old Vancouver. It ’s amazing! Next day we head to Granville Island Public Market (open daily; Granville Island .com) and pick up a delectable spread for a picnic lunch. By now we are itching for a bit of activity, so we head to Stanley Park. It’s great to explore on foot or by bicycle. But if you’re up for a real challenge, do what the locals call “The Grouse G rind” and hike up Grouse Mountain to get a view of the city. Be warned: not for the fainthearted!...
