Wise words as usual, Madigan - particularly when you're agreeing with me ;)

It's not as much the reviews that should make hotels think twice about linking to TripAdvisor but the barrage of ads, pop-ups etc encouraging potential guests to book elsewhere.

TripAdvisor would win so much more support from hoteliers if it would sort its consumer responses so they could be sorted into
1. the last 3 months reviews
2. the last 6 months reviews
3. the last years
4. the last 2 years
5. and the last 3 years
6. lastly a group of power users who have made more than 20 reviews - seasoned reviewers not those with an occasional quirky review.

Such sorting would allow users to see if today was better than yesterday and feel confident from experienced reviewers and travelors.

You're right - it's time for hoteliers to take a much more active but judicious role in reviewing and responding to online reviews. Handled properly, management responses on sites like TripAdvisor can actually help communicate the hotel's positioning and enhance the brand.

I'm still an advocate for placing a prominent link to TripAdvisor on a hotel's site (opening in a new window of course). It shows site visitors confidence in the product and they will most likely go there anyway. Why not save them the trouble of looking up the hotel?

Of course, if a hotel doesn't have confidence in their product - that's a horse of a different color.
